The chilly
months of winter are passing quickly, and talk of spring lingers in the air.
Spring is the season of rejuvenation and rebirth, the time to start anew. But
for Pharmacists in their post-graduate training, the coming spring can only
mean one thing: the ASHP Residency Match registration deadline is approaching.
March 6th
marks the final date to register to participate in the ASHP Residency Match.
Registration is necessary for those looking to obtain a residency that is
accredited by the ASHP. The Residency Match Program (RMP), is an excellent
opportunity for you to be paired with the perfect pharmacy for your needs,
which can propel your career in the right direction and define your
professional life.
What is the
Pharmacy Residency Match Program?
The purpose
of the RMP is to match postgraduate students with a residency of their
choosing, but it also serves to assist pharmacies in selecting the right
candidate. It is sponsored and supervised by the American Society of
Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), and it’s administered by the National
Matching Services Incorporated (NMS).
All
ASHP-accredited pharmacy residencies, including those in a preliminary
accreditation, candidate status, or pre-candidate status are required to
participate in the RMP, with the exception of some that are sponsored by the
military or Public Health Service.
How to
Register
Eligibility
Requirements
The first
step in applying for the Match is to make sure you’re eligible. The ASHP
Residency Match is open to all 1st and 2nd year postgraduate students attending
a ACPE-accredited college of pharmacy, or those otherwise be eligible for
licensure. You must also review and agree to the Applicant Agreement. Completion of the
postgraduate year 1 (PGY1) of schooling must be done prior to beginning a
postgraduate year 2 (PGY2) residency. Be sure you’re applying to applicable
programs, depending on your postgraduate year.
Online
Registration
You can
register for the match on the . National Matching Service After filling out all
pertinent information and setting up your account, you will be asked to pay a
$125 fee. Remember that the final date to register is March 6th.
Registration
is only the first step in the process, however. After you’ve registered, you
must apply directly to the residencies you would like to be considered for. Most
residencies can be applied to by using the PhORCAS online application which is a
separate institution that collects and distributes application materials. If
the residency you wish to apply for does not participate in PhORCAS, you must
apply directly to that pharmacy by checking with them for their application
procedures and deadlines. (Note: all application materials, including
transcripts, references, etc. must be sent directly to PhORCAS or the pharmacy
in which you are applying.)
The Rank
Order List
Your Rank
Order List is a listing of all the residencies in which you wish to be
considered for, with your highest choice at the top. It should include ONLY
residencies that you would accept the position if offered. Similarly, you
cannot be matched with a residency you don’t put on your Rank Order List, so
you must include ALL programs you wish to apply for. If you care only to be
matched with your highest choice, it is possible to list only that residency.
The final
date to submit your Rank Order List is March 7th, 2014. To complete your Rank
Order List, logon to the ROLIC System after February 17th.
