Pharmacy Reciprocation Process Among States

So You Want to Move Out of State: The Pharmacy Reciprocation Process Among States

Relocating to a different state can be an exciting time in a person’s life, but the pressure of transferring jobs or careers can be a lot to handle. Because the regulations that govern pharmacy licensure are statewide instead of federal, pharmacists may have concerns about the process involved with moving out of state. Pharmacists are required to be licensed in the state in which they are practicing, which means you’re current license will likely not carry over to a different state seamlessly. Planning ahead can make the transition easier for you. It’s crucial to start early to make sure you’re taking the proper steps the licensing process requires.

Decide and Research

Know the state in which you are moving and call or check the board of pharmacy’s website to make sure you’re preparing yourself for a smooth transfer between states. It’s imperative that you’re aware of the source of your information: it should be the official board of pharmacy for the applicable state. If you’re using another source, fact-check it against the state’s board procedures. Then, check to see if the state you currently live in and the state in which you move have reciprocity procedures.

Check Your Credentials

Ensure that you have an active license in your current state and that you’ve been licensed for the required time for the state in which you are relocating. Each state differs, some require that you have been licensed for a period of time and also have worked in a pharmacy for a number of hours.

Plan for Potential Examinations or Interviews

Some states will require you to take an exam or interview with the board. If there is an exam, either arrange a time to take it or begin studying and completing related coursework in order to pass the exam. Research any differences the exam may have with other states, and confirm you’re studying for the appropriate one. Practice for your interview and have all necessary documents or outlines of achievements in your field prepared.

Rest Assured

For complete assurance that you’re following the correct guidelines, double check your work. Go back through the board’s requirements to ensure you’ve completed every step in the process, and also gather any additional information you need to transition.

Apply

Once you’ve completed the process, it’s time to apply for a position in your new home state. Starting a new job can be both rewarding and exciting, and possibilities for growth can be endless if you’re properly prepared. Once the licensure and application processes are completed, it’s time to sit back, relax, and enjoy your new surroundings.
